A walk through Zagreb’s Upper Town feels like stepping straight into a storybook. As you climb the cobblestone streets, the air changes – quieter, older, filled with echoes of knights, merchants, and poets who once lived behind the colorful facades. From the top of Lotrščak Tower, the whole city spreads beneath your feet: red rooftops, winding streets, and the sparkling Sava River stretching into the horizon. It’s the perfect spot to imagine how medieval guards once scanned the skyline, watching for danger while you now watch the trams glide like little toys far below.
But Lotrščak Tower isn’t just about the view – it hides a surprise that makes Zagreb unique. Every day at exactly noon, a cannon booms from its walls, startling newcomers and making locals smile. This tradition has lasted for centuries, originally used to tell the townspeople the exact time of day. Imagine standing there with your classmates, waiting for the clock to strike twelve, feeling the anticipation rise in the air… and then suddenly, a thunderclap over the rooftops! It’s the kind of memory that sticks with you forever.
The Upper Town itself is full of hidden corners that spark curiosity. You’ll stroll past St. Mark’s Church with its dazzling roof tiles arranged like a giant puzzle, discover secret passages that once connected noble families’ homes, and hear stories of daring duels, political plots, and even mysterious legends whispered at twilight. This isn’t just a walk – it’s an adventure through time, where you get to imagine yourself as part of the city’s living history. By the end of the tour, you won’t just know Zagreb better – you’ll feel like the Upper Town has shared some of its secrets with you.
