Speed up the development of your language skills by participating in the Socio-Cultural Activities program and have a great time while doing it.

Every country has its traditional drink – and in Croatia, that crown belongs to rakija, the fiery spirit that locals often call the “nectar of the gods.” Whether you’re feeling sick, sad, cold, or even overly happy, Croatians will almost always offer you a small glass of rakija as a universal cure. More than just a drink, rakija is a part of everyday life and social rituals – it’s what families serve to welcome guests, what friends share to celebrate, and what people sip slowly while telling stories late into the night.

The flavors of rakija are as diverse as Croatia itself. In the coastal regions you’ll often find rakija infused with herbs like rosemary or sage, while inland it’s common to taste fruit-based versions made from plums, pears, or apricots. Some varieties are strong and fiery, others sweet and smooth – and each carries the stamp of the region where it was made. Learning about rakija means discovering a piece of Croatian identity, because behind every bottle there’s a tradition, a recipe passed down through generations, and often a touch of local folklore.

In this fun and interactive workshop, we’ll dive into the history and importance of rakija, discover its many uses beyond just drinking (from medicine to cooking), and of course – have a sip or two ourselves. To make things even more exciting, we’ll end with a rakija tasting challenge where everyone gets to vote and choose their favorite flavor. It’s a chance not only to learn, but also to laugh, share impressions, and experience Croatian culture in one of its most authentic forms.
