Valentine’s Day in Croatia (Valentinovo) is celebrated on 14 February much like in many other countries, but with a few charming local twists that make it extra special! While the holiday has become more popular in recent decades, Croatians enjoy showing love and affection through classic gestures — exchanging flowers, chocolates, small gifts, and romantic dinners with partners — all set against the backdrop of cozy winter towns and city streets.
Aside from the usual love notes and dinner dates, Croatia has some delightful Valentine’s traditions rooted in folklore and cultural heritage. In parts of the country, people once believed that seeing certain birds on Valentine’s Day could predict future love or marriage prospects, and legend has it that even the weather on 14 February can bring luck for the year ahead. One of the most iconic Croatian love symbols is the Licitar heart — a brightly decorated honey-dough cookie often given as a gift to express affection, especially in Zagreb.
Today, Valentine’s Day in Croatia is both a festive and heartfelt celebration. Whether you’re strolling historic squares, sharing desserts overlooking the Adriatic, or simply saying “Volim te” with a smile, Valentine’s in Croatia is a wonderfully warm experience worth exploring — and perfect inspiration for our workshop!
