Kula Lotrščak is one of Zagreb’s most iconic landmarks and a true gateway into the city’s medieval past. Built in the 13th century as part of the defensive walls of Gradec, the tower played a key role in protecting the town from invading forces. Today, the tower still dominates the Upper Town skyline, reminding visitors that Zagreb’s history was once shaped by real danger, courage, and clever defense.
One of the most exciting traditions connected to the tower is the daily firing of the Grič Cannon (Grički top), which has marked noon since 1877. According to legend, a cannon shot from Lotrščak once landed in an Ottoman military camp just as the soldiers were preparing lunch, convincing them to retreat and sparing the city from attack. Legend or not, the cannon still fires every day at exactly 12:00—and being there when it happens is loud, dramatic, and absolutely unforgettable.
After the cannon fires, there’s time for a few classic Zagreb moments. Just nearby, an obligatory selfie awaits with the statue of Antun Gustav Matoš, one of Croatia’s most famous writers and a favorite photo stop for locals and visitors alike. Then it’s off for a relaxed coffee together—a perfect, low-key way to unwind, chat, and enjoy the atmosphere of the Upper Town.
